Welcome to the online home of Jim Scully. I am a composer, performer and music educator currently residing in Bakersfield, California. I am a full-time lecturer at CSU Bakersfield where I teach a wide range of courses in Music Theory, Jazz Studies and Music Technology. I also serve as Director of the CSUB Guitar Ensemble, Director of Small Group Jazz, Director of the CSUB Music Lab and Assistant Director of the Bakersfield Jazz Festival.

My compositional style is eclectic, but my sound is firmly rooted in jazz. As a child of the late 20th century, I am - of course - greatly influenced by various other musics, including rock, pop, electronic and contemporary classical. For more day-to-day goings on you can find me on
Facebook or Twitter. For longer form information - this is the best place to visit.

Lyric Inspiration Project Sampler

NEWS...

* I am in the midst of a new project - the Lyric Inspiration Project. With the help of a Quick Advancement Grant from American Composers Forum, I am composing new tunes for my 4-tet w/ Kris Tiner, Glen Fong and Canaan McDuffie. For more information, continue reading HERE.

*
I received a request (not quite a commission!) to write a new solo guitar work for Roger Allen Cope - a Nocturne inspired work for solo guitar - to be premiered on March 2, 2012 at the CSU Bakersfield Guitar Arts Concert Series. This work is being funded, in part, through a grant from the Chancellor of the California State University. Click HERE to read more information about this exciting project.

*
I was recently commissioned by Los Angeles based guitarist Nicolas Deuson to write a piece for guitar and voice using the poetry of Dana Goodyear as inspiration. I am very excited about this project. The proposed premier date is fall, 2013.
